  • ( ) Duty calls – and the weight stays

IT HAS been seven gruelling months since I embarked on my Beginner's project, and although my initial progress was good and I was on course to meet my target, I was derailed by subsequent events that drove home the hard truth that it is difficult to lose weight.

In my line of work, there is often a conflict between the demands of the call of duty and the weight loss programme, and inevitably, the latter must give way. Thus, I had to stop in February and resumed the programme only in April, and I have shed only 12kg.

Naturally, I am very disappointed at not having achieved my target of shedding 20kg, but nevertheless, I have decided to have my finale 3km run at Subang Ria Park at 8am on June 7. In the meantime, I shall do my best to shed more weight.

  • ( ) Health & Exercise

About a year ago SELF magazine approached me to ask whether the UNC Eating Disorders Program would be interested in collaborating with the publication in developing and conducting a national survey of women designed to produce an unfiltered snapshot of disordered eating behaviors in American women. The first thoughts that went through my head were really images -- images of SELF covers with thin women, diet headlines, recipes, rapid weight loss promises. At the same time, they promised dissemination of accurate information to 50.8 million readers, which was many more than we could ever reach through academic outlets. So I remained open-minded and met with the editors of SELF in New York. The Conde Nast building, at first glance, was a caricature. If you've seen "The Devil Wears Prada," you get the picture: young women teetering in their heels and short skirts, makeup and perfect hair everywhere. More>>
  • ( ) End of school celebrated

PASCAGOULA -- Even though the event had to be postponed on Friday due to rain, SOAR -- Students' Outstanding Achievement Rally -- participants celebrated Monday the end of another school year and the overwhelming success of an employee weight-loss campaign.

Somewhere between 3,000 and 3,500 students, teachers, parents, administrators, business owners and community members enjoyed the free food, fun and games at Pascagoula's War Memorial Stadium.

This year's event focused on health and fitness-related issues as five employees of the school district were recognized for losing the most weight as part of the "Losing Weight and Feeling Great in 2008" program. Garry Blakeney from Pascagoula High School lost 187 pounds to be the "biggest loser."

The program set the total weight-loss goal at a ton for the almost 900 participants who committed to being more healthy even if no weight was lost, according to Debbie Anglin, communications director for the Pascagoula School District. More>>

  • ( ) Slimmer, trimmer and chatting with Dr. Phil about it

YAKIMA -- Wendi Pearson was bored at work one day, so she sent an e-mail to the "Dr. Phil" show. A year and a half later, she was flown to Los Angeles to talk with Dr. Phil about her weight loss success.

The program airs at 3 p.m. Friday on KIMA -TV.

"They flew me down there for four days, and seriously, we were each on there for 30 seconds," said the Moxee resident, who works part time at the Larson Gallery in Yakima. "Once I got there I wasn't one single bit nervous. ... I soaked in the experience and had fun with it."

The program shares the stories of Pearson and two other women who lost a combined total of 353 pounds and 32 sizes by following advice in Dr. Phil McGraw's book, "The Ultimate Weight Solution."

Pearson, 31, said she didn't want to appear on the show at first because she hated the idea of her "giant, fat pictures shown to the whole world." But she's glad she changed her mind. More>>
