  • ( ) New weight loss camp set to open in the Hill Country

Starting this summer, people who have been on the weight loss treadmill for years without success can attend a weight loss camp on the campus of Schreiner University in Kerrville.

"All the diets work. It's the people that fail," said Marvin Willis, an Exodus Weight Loss Camp co-founder in Kerrville.

Campers will live in apartment-type dormitories and have healthy meals cooked up and served in the Schreiner dining facilities. A carefully planned day will include trips to the wellness center.

"The idea behind it is to get them in a different environment, and get them away from the surroundings they are in and try to give them a boost, you know, give them a head start on what they need to do for the rest of their life," Willis said.

Trainers will teach the campers fun and easy ways to incorporate exercise into their daily lives. More>>

However, the market has been in decline since 2002, on the back of a negative consumer perception of diet pills, said the market researcher. This has resulted from a number of recent issues in the news, such as ingredient bans (ephedra), personal injury lawsuits, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fines for false advertising, and manufacturer bankruptcies. The recent petition from drug firm GlaxoSmithKline requesting that weight loss claims be considered disease claims can only exacerbate the situation.
